Civil war in Yemen turns domestic transportation into ordeal
ADEN, YEMEN - JANUARY 21: The closure or damage of intercity main roads due to the civil war that has been going on for about seven years in Yemen causes great difficulties for the people during their journeys.
The Sana-Aden main road, which connects the two most important cities, is considered the most vital road in the country. Before the war, transportation could be provided by public transport or taxis, or by half-hour flights between the two cities.
This road which is approximately 400- kilometers, takes 7-9 hours, but a longer alternative road is currently used for transportation. Moreover, it is dangerous to take this road because it is located between steep mountains and is narrow.
Additionally, passengers complain that the Taiz-Aden road is dangerous as it is rocky and full of potholes.
The distance between the capital Sana and the city of Mukalla, the center of Hadramaut, is normally passed in 10 hours. However, this period increases up to 20 hours with alternative routes, which have become a mandatory choice for security reasons.
Yemenis, whose transportation problems are not limited to intercity roads, also face difficulties in traveling within the same province.
On January 12, Hans Grundberg, UN Secretary-General’s envoy to the war-torn nation, told the Security Council that “The continued imposition of road closures and checkpoints across the country, as well as the impediments to imports and the domestic distribution of goods essential for civilians, including fuel, is harming the population in unjustifiable ways."(Footage by Abdulnasser Alseddik/Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
