Tim Conway: The character Charles Parker on McHale’s Navy is pretty much me. I’m just a wild, carefree guy who thinks he knows what he’s doing but obviously in many cases doesn’t. Don Knotts and I really pretty much played the same role. As a matter of fact the two shows were on at the same time and Don and I were always up for Emmys at the end of the season and Don always won, he won like 4 years in a row. And then I was nominated one year with Don and I said, if I would I would actually thank and be in Opie because I didn’t want people to get out of sorts over the fact that Don hadn’t won that year. It was a fun group to work with. Ernie was just so free with the cast and the cast was so good, and so unique, and so...Y’know Joe Flynn was also a very funny guy, he was a natural comedian. And so we all got along so well and it was kind of a man’s show, you could spit and smoke and everything. So it was a great place to work, really was.
