2,000-year-old city in Tunisia carries traces of ancient Roman warriors

QASRIN, TUNISIA - OCTOBER 14: The ancient city of Hydra which draws attention as one of the most important structures remaining from the Roman period has been carrying the traces of ancient Roman warriors. The ruins far from Carthage, in the middle of the deserts of western Tunisia, include mausoleums, Byzantine fortresses, underground baths, and a church. The ancient city, located in Qasrin, one of Tunisia’s border provinces to Algeria, is called “Amidra” in the Roman language. Amidra was on the border between the valleys and the Berber tribes and was part of the Roman province of Byzacena. It was founded in AD 6 to 14 century as a barracks for Roman warriors. Amidra, which turned into a settlement after about 60 years, became one of the valuable trade points in time due to its location in the middle of Carthage and another Roman city Tebessa, which is now at the end of Algeria. Speaking to Anadolu Agency Video News the professor of Ancient History at the University of Tunisia, Lotfi al-Nadari said that the ancient city of Hydra entered history with the concentration of the Third Holy Legion in the Roman army, and it became its first camp during the reign of Emperor Augustus (6-14 AD). The legion was partly responsible for the urbanization of the North African provinces, building roads, and other infrastructure. Nadari said the excavation team found the names of many Roman officials and warriors were as well as historical artifacts in the region. The professor explained that Amidra was home to around 6,000 soldiers, especially with the auxiliary unit soldiers recruited from the locals, especially during the revolution of the barbarian leader Takfarinas in the center-west of Tunisia (a Numidian recruit in the Roman army revolted against the rule of Rome for North Africa from 17 AD to 24 AD).(Footage by Arbi Mahjoubi/Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
