Dominic Raab MP (Foreign Secretary) interview SOT. (part 2 of 2)
- I think the assessment under-estimated both the will of the Taliban to proceed as quickly as they were willing to, but also ultimately we thought the Afghan institutions would be more resilient than they were / on details of the resettlement scheme and evacuations / we have an asylum system, I'm the son of a refugee, Priti Patel is the same, child of refugee parents, we want to show that Britain is a big-hearted nation, so as we did with Syria, we'll come up with a bespoke arrangement for Afghanistan / if you look at the gains we made over 20 years, 40 percent fewer women in childbirth and pregnancy dying, 10 million more children, many of them girls, going into school, we do want to make sure we protect as best we can women in particular from the worst fears we've got of a new Taliban regime / let me allow the Home Secretary and Prime Minister to announce the full details / I'm here in this country and this position because Britain opened it's arms to my father in 1938 when he left Nazi overrun Czechoslovakia, Priti Patel's parents fled Uganda in the 70s, you've got a lot of children of immigrants around the cabinet table, we want to live up to the finest traditions of this country, big-hearted but also credible and realistic about what we can do / [on claims he was on a beach when Kabul fell, was he asleep at the wheel?] no, absolutely not, we were all caught surprised, I was engaged in COBRA meetings, several meetings on that Sunday with my officials... I was not lounging all day on the beach, my family was there, so to give you a very honest answer, rather than having them in the hotel room with me whilst I was conducting all this business, I was checking in with them episodically as we cut short the holiday
