Q: WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO ACHIEVE IN SCIENCE
- I would like to play a part in discovering the laws that govern the universe / that maybe we are fairly near to finding a complete set of scientific laws
Q: THAT'S THE GRAND UNIFICATION / ISN'T IT POSSIBLE THAT THAT GRAND UNIFICATION MAY PROVE TO BE A HOLY GRAIL
- It is possible that we will never discover a complete theory of the universe, only a sequence of theories that describe the universe more and more accurately / but there are some grounds for thinking that there is an ultimate theory / whether we are smart enough to find it is another matter / I hope we are

- I bet Kip Thorne that there is a not a black hole in the star system called Cygnus X-1 / this was really an insurance policy / I have done a lot of work on black holes and it would be all be wasted if black holes don't exist / however, I now think the observational evidence for black holes is so good that I have decided to concede the bet / I will send Kip Thorne one year's subscription to Penthouse
Q: IN THIS WEEK'S COPY OF NEWSWEEK, IT SAYS WHEN YOU FOUND YOU HAD MOTOR NEURONE DISEASE YOU LISTENED TO A LOT OF WAGNER, READ SCIENCE FICTION AND DRANK A LOT / WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO TURN TO SCIENCE DESPITE THE DIFFICULTIES CREATED BY Y...
