Stanford law professor says founders created impeachment for unscrupulous officials
Stanford law professor Pamela Karlan tells the House Judiciary Committee in her statement at its first impeachment inquiry hearing against President Donald Trump that the United States invented the idea of absentee voting so the union troops who supported President Abraham Lincoln could stay in the field during the 1864 election and since then countless Americans have fought and died to prevent protect that right to vote, a key reason for including the impeachment power was the risk that unscrupulous officials might try to rig the election process, to had already given William Davey his props but Hamilton got a whole musical and Davey just got a committee hearing, warning that unless the Constitution contained an impeachment provision the president might expend efforts to get himself reelected, George Mason insisted that a president who procured his appointment in the first instance through a proper and corrupt means should not escape punishment by repeating his guilt from a list of high crimes and misdemeanors as impeachable offenses, whether an election that got him into office or an upcoming election where a president seeks an additional term.
