Speaker Ryan About Preparing Zika Response Funding, 2017 Budget Process

Speaker of the House Paul Ryan of Wisconsin tells reporters at a weekly briefing that he is awaiting an actual submission from the administration for emergency funding to combat Zika virus, saying his counterpart Senator McConnell has met with Senate appropriators and there will be a briefing with all of members on the matter, saying it is a problem we like to get ahead of, asserting that Congress offsets emergency spending. Asked about intraparty difficulties over the next budget, Ryan insists that there never was a set deadline but for April 15. Ryan says he feels very strongly about getting a real working appropriations process so that we can reclaim the power of the purse, adding that his views are very well known and he wants a jump on the schedule because we are losing several weeks because of the conventions, calling the political difficulty not a unique situation but an annual situation.
