Poor families in Spanish major cities being settled in vacant villages
MADRID, SPAIN - APRIL 18: Spanish charities have been settling needy families, who have financial difficulties due to the high cost of living in the major cities of the country, in villages vacated due to migration and elderly deaths.
Seeking a solution to poor people's need for accommodation, which has increased three times due to the economic effects of the coronavirus outbreak, Madrina Foundation have provided shelter and subsistence to poor families.
Conrado Gimenez, the President of Madrina Foundation, said the unemployment problems and the high cost of living in the cities have caused sociological dramas for young and poor families.
The foundation recently placed a couple with four children, Tamara (30) and Jacinto Antonio (33), in a village house.
The couple was living in the Spanish capital Madrid in bad conditions.
Now, they began a new life in La Torre, a village with a population of 140 and located 120 kilometers outside the capital.,
Stressing the bad conditions in Madrid, such as security and economic problems, Tamara said: “the best life for our children under our conditions is here."
On her unemployment problem, Tamara said she was offered to care of an elderly person in a nearby village and she took the job.
Agreeing with the words of Tamara, Jacinto said: "This is a new page in our lives. I am very happy. I am very pleased. Because I had lived in such a village in my own country [Ecuador]."
Marisol Domingo Gonzalez, the headteacher of the village school, said the project is an excellent initiative.
Meanwhile, drawing attention to that the village population has decreased threefold over the last three decades, Bernardino Jimenez, the mayor of La Torre, said: "We need those people to stay and live here. This is the best for all."
He also said there are job opportunities in the town such as care for the elderly or labor in the fields.(Footage by Senhan Bolelli/Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
