Theatre: Sir Ian McKellen and Toheeb Jimoh interview; Part 1 of 7 ENGLAND: INT Sir Ian McKellen (Actor) and Toheeb Jimoh (Actor) interview SOT Q: DID YOU KNOW EACH OTHER BEFORE THIS PRODUCTION - (McKellen) No, I didn't really even know of him Q: YOU'VE NEVER SEEN TED LASSO - (McKellen) Who Q: TED LASSO - (McKellen) No I haven't seen Ted Lasso / what more is there to be said (laughter) - (Jimoh) I on the other hand did know Sir Ian McKellen (laughs) - (McKellen) I've never I think met anyone who I've immediately wanted to be a friend with as I did with Toheeb, I think that was sort of mutual wasn't it - (Jimoh) It definitely was yeah - (McKellen) And that's very good for the play, because we play very close friends, who shout at each other quite a lot, because they're very critical of each other / you can't beat, you cannot buy, you cannot act genuine relationships on the stage, you can't fake them / I like it when people came round and said that Prince Hal and Falstaff were such good friends was palpable and anyway, lets start the interview (laughs) Q: PRINCE HAL AND FALSTAFF, THAT'S ONE OF THE GREAT SHAKESPEAREAN RELATIONSHIPS THAT HE WROTE ISN'T IT / CHEMISTRY IS ALL - (McKellen) Hal is the main part, Prince Hal turns into King Henry V, 'once more unto the breach dear friends', your next part - (Jimoh) And that's official, he said it (laughs) - (McKellen) The wonderful story of his youth and waywardness and falling into the friendly embrace of Falstaff who leads him astray, but for his own good perhaps you might think / it's the tension between the father figure that Falstaff represents and your real father the King - (Jimoh) And being caught between the two of them yeah / and also running away from this looming destiny of the fact he's going to inherit a country Q: A COUNTRY IN TURMOIL - (Jimoh) A country in turmoil in the midst of war / it's difficult and I think he's trying to find solace at the bottom of a bottle ...
