Congressional Hearing on PBS Funding
Singer Pearl Bailey finishing testimony on PBS funding: "I just want to leave you with one thing. If we never get a chance to meet in here again, I know everybody has to have some words written. I only can talk from my heart. What else can I talk from? It comes out of my mouth, but it's comin' outta here [pointing to heart], and I know what's up here [pointing to head]. Where in the world would we get something like, the 'Brideshead Revisited', with the Oliviers, with the John Gielguds? Where you gonna get that? Who's gonna pay for it? That's the first question. So that's why I'm totally against too much commercialism, for sure. Nothing could do more justice to this country... cut, cut, cut, but the federal government has an obligation to the people of this country to let their brains absorb some beauty, intelligence, and if we are taking that away from the people, then the federal government is not fulfilling what it should do. The government of this United States owes, for little pennies that we are taking from something else, take away a little of something else we don't need, and don't let the people of this country, who are fighting for bread, jobs, common decency. If you take that away from us, we have nothing. PBS not ought to have the opportunity to be funded. PBS must be funded. Thank you." Predominately Caucasian adult men and women listening. Ben Wattenberg seated next to Bailey; Caucasian male and female children seated behind Bailey.
