Senator Sanders says Trump administration must not abolish Education Department

Senate HELP Committee Ranking Member Bernie Sanders of Vermont says at a news conference amid reports that newly confirmed Secretary Linda McMahon was moving to abolish the Department of Education under a possible executive order by President Trump that if the federal government ceased to fund the educational needs of working class communities, that meant higher local and state taxes to fill the void, making the shutdown of the Department of Education a disaster for low-income and working class families in every state, and while the Department needed to be more efficient, it should not be destroyed to wreak havoc on working class families, as the wealthiest country in world history should have the best educational system with reforms to attract the best teachers with minimum salaries of $60,000 a year, strengthened childcare, after-school and summer programs, investment in children's mental health, full funding for individuals with disabilities in Education Act, and protection for low-income and working class kids rather than tax breaks for billionaires and oligarchs.
