Senator Mullin notes chemical 6PPD used in tires since 1960s, human health impact unknown

Senate Environment and Public Works Subcommittee on Chemical Safety, Waste Management, Environmental Justice, and Regulatory Oversight Ranking Member Markwayne Mullin says opening a hearing with a Washington State program manager, a US Tire Manufacturers Association representative and a chemical exposure attorney about the environmental impacts of 6PPD that 6PPD had been used in automotive tires since the 1960s to protect against dry rot and improve passenger safety, but recent scientific discoveries had shown that its reaction with oxygen forms 6PPD-q, which harms fish like coho salmon, noting that there was then no existing replacement for 6PPD and that the human health impacts were still unknown.
