Senator Hickenlooper notes dope test–positive Chinese swimmers won medals at Tokyo Olympics
Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Consumer Protection, Technology, and Data Privacy Ranking Member John Hickenlooper of Colorado says at a hearing about lacking international response to Chinese doping in Olympic swimming that in months leading up to Tokyo 2021 Summer Olympics, China's anti-doping agency found 23 Chinese swimming athletes tested positive for banned substance trimetazidine, which increases stamina and shortens recovery time as widely banned performance enhancing drug, but World Anti-Doping Agency refused to investigate how China's swimmers consumed the banned substance, failed to disclose testing results to public until New York Times broke the news in spring 2024, while these same swimmers who tested positive won several medals including three golds and ironically defeated Katie Ledecky, causing the world to lose faith in WADA's response and prompting United States to take decisive action by withholding $3.6 million contribution.
