Friendship Walk Commemorates Korean Dynasty's Mission To Japan
SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA - APR. 1: Scores of citizens from South Korea and Japan on Wednesday April 1 kicked off a "friendship walk" from Seoul to Busan, as part of a journey to trace the one-time route of diplomatic mission from Korean Dynasty to Japanese Shogunate. The commemorative event started in 2007 to promote friendship between the two neighboring nations, and has since been held every two years. The old Korean mission dates back to 14th century and most frequently visited Japan under Tokugawa Shogunate between 17th and 19th century. It was also known for fabulous processions in traditional Korean costumes with music bands along Japan's main streets . In Wednesday morning, the participants started the walk from Gyeongbokgung, the royal palace of the dynasty that ruled Korea between 14th and early 20th centuries. The whole trip also includes ship cruising from Busan to Japan, the bus rides in western parts of Japan, and the walk from Osaka to Tokyo as the last leg. A former official of city of Seoul who says he is a descendant of 17th-century envoy to Japan was among the participants of the walk, "I want to talk with many Japanese participants, carrying on the spirit of goodwill diplomacy cherished by our ancestors," he said.
