Sayaca Tanager (Thraupis sayaca) feeding in moist Atlantic forest. - 4K stock video
It measures between 16 and 19 centimeters in length and weighs between 28 and 43 grams. (Hilty, 2011).
The adult Thraupis sayaca is generally gray in color, with turquoise blue wings and tail. Its head is gray with a thin, faint dark gray post-ocular stripe that is not always visible. Forehead, crown and nape also gray. The flowers are gray, the same color as the head. The color of the mantle is gray, but darker than the back of the neck. The covering feathers are bluish gray. The remiges have a beautiful bluish gray color, with greenish metallic reflections and the inner edges of the dark feathers. The rump, as well as the supracaudal feathers, are bluish gray and the rectrices are bluish with the same green metallic reflections as the remiges. The throat, chest and belly are gray and the crest is white.
The eyes are dark and the beak is dark gray in color, with the proximal portion of the beak being lighter in color than the distal portion. Tarsi and feet are gray.
The young or immature is similar to the adult of the species, however its color is greener, paler and more opaque than the latter.
The puppies are gray and have a pink lip corner.
It can be confused with the blue-backed tanager, but the latter is much more bluish, without the green metallic reflections, especially where the wing meets, and also has a larger beak. It is without a doubt the most common tanager in our country. It has a long song, interspersed with the sound of high and low notes. The song of the species varies from place to place, with examples of gray tanagers singing differently even in the same neighborhood.
