SANTA MARTA, COLOMBIA - JUNE 12: Santa Marta, known as "the oldest city in South America," is a jewel of Colombia, attracting over a million tourists annually with its rich history and vibrant culture. Nestled between the Sierra Nevada Mountains and the Caribbean Sea in the Magdalena department, Santa Marta offers a blend of historical significance and natural beauty. Founded on July 29, 1525, by Spanish explorer Rodrigo Galvan de Bastidas, Santa Marta is one of Colombia's most significant port cities. The city, named after Saint Martha of Seville, Spain, was envisioned by Bastidas as a thriving colonial hub. However, Bastidas' life ended tragically in Cuba after an attack by colonial soldiers. Throughout the 16th century, Santa Marta, rich in gold, suffered over 20 attacks from British, Dutch, and French pirates. The city also endured decades of hardship following a devastating earthquake in 1834. Santa Marta is the birthplace of legendary Colombian footballers Carlos "El Pibe" Valderrama and Radamel Falcao, enhancing its cultural legacy. Tairona National Natural Park, Colombia's premier ecological reserve, is a major attraction in Santa Marta. Visitors to the park can explore camping areas, archaeological sites, and tropical forests, gaining insights into pre-Columbian history and the natives' craftsmanship.
