Summer's arrival paints French saltworks in pink hue
AIGUES-MORTES, FRANCE - AUGUST 16: Salt fields near the walled town of Aigues-Mortes in the southern part of France have turned pink with the arrival of summer.
The town of Aigues-Mortes, located near the salt fields, attracts tourists due to its well-preserved medieval-walls.
The salt lakes turn pink during the summer months due to the presence of a type of salt-loving microorganisms called "halophilic" bacteria and algae.
In salt lakes, these bacteria and algae flourish because they are specially adapted to survive in such extreme conditions.
The pigments they produce give the water its distinctive pink color when their numbers increase significantly during the summer months.
