Rwanda marks 29th anniversary of 1994 genocide

KIGALI, RWANDA - APRIL 06: Rwandans paused Friday (Apr. 7) to mark the 29th anniversary of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi ethnic group at nationwide remembrance ceremonies to honor 1 million people killed in 100 days. Rwandan President Paul Kagame and his wife Jeannette Kagame attended a commemoration ceremony at the Genocide Memorial in Kigali where they laid a wreath and lit the Flame of Remembrance in honour of over one million victims. Its very clear that the wounds are still deep but Rwandans, I thank all of you, for refusing to be defined by this tragic history. People have been ready, have been willing to do the most difficult thing, one or the other. They have decided to forgive, but we cant forget. President Kagame said on Twitter. Thousands gathered at memorial sites in the national capital of Kigali and across the country to lay wreaths on graves where victims are buried, but with a sense of determination to move forward after nearly three decades. About 1 million people, mostly from the Tutsi community and moderate Hutus, were killed by Hutu extremists. (Footage by Cyril Ndegeya/Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
