Robert Buckland talks about marriage permissions announcement, the likelihood of restrictions being eased earlier and his views on over 18s receiving their jabs at pop-up centres.
Coronavirus: Robert Buckland interview; Part 1 of 2
ENGLAND: London:
EXT
Robert Buckland MP (Justice Secretary) along and interview SOT
Q: Tell us, first of all, you've got this announcement about people getting married today, tell us about that today
- We are going to make it easier for couples to celebrate the most important day of their lives in as free away as possible / we're going to allow civil marriages and civil partnerships to be celebrated out of doors, which means that in venues that already approved to hold marriages, we will have greater flexibility in order to make the special day as memorable as possible to have as many friends and loved ones there too / let's hope we have that summer so that as many couples as possible can take advantage of this new flexibility
Q: What do you make of all the scenes of over 18s getting their jabs queuing up at these pop-up centres
A: Wonderful to see, the queue snaking round, the vaccination centres, and to see our young people getting that opportunity to get the jab, that's going to be the best way for us to reach the next stage of the roadmap / and the race is on though, to get as many people jabbed as possible so that we can continue to break that cycle between the virus and transmission of that virus that clearly the evidence shows the jab helps
Q: On that evidence, there's a report today that Matt Hancock withheld the data from the quad of ministers who made the decision, is that true
- It's not true / the material that the ministers made the decision on was full / it included all the modelling and the information that was provided by Mr. Hancock and his department / all the materials before the prime minister and the decision was made with the fullest disclosure
Q: The data is better than many people would have dared to hope in terms of how effective the vaccine is; how likely is it that we could be looking at easing restrictions in two weeks on the 5th of July, rather than on the 19th
