Ukrainians attend Christmas Mass at Kyiv church

KYIV, UKRAINE - DEC. 25: Residents of the Ukrainian capital gathered on Sunday, Dec. 25, to attend Christmas mass held at St. Alexander Roman Catholic Church. This year, Ukrainians carry out Christmas routines and prepare for the new year in the shade of the Russian war. As the war is now heading into winter, there are no signs of an end to the offensive. Last week, Ukraines president called on Russia to start withdrawing its forces at Christmas, local media reported. Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged Russia to at least try to prove that it is capable of abandoning aggression as Christmas approaches. This is the time for normal people to think about peace, not aggression, he said, adding, If Russia withdraws its troops from Ukraine, it will ensure a lasting cessation of hostilities. Zelenskyy argued that Russias answer to the call would show what the Russians really want -- peace or war. The one who brought the war upon us has to take it away, he added. Russia started its "special military operation" on Feb 24, and claims that it is aimed at protecting people in the eastern region of Ukraine. As of last mid-December, civilian casualties in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war reached 17,595, including 6,826 deaths and 10,769 injuries, according to UN figures.(Footage by Oleksii Chumachenko /Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
