Evacuations underway as Hurricane Rafael approaches Havana, Cuba
HAVANA, CUBA - NOV. 6: Residents of the town of Batabano were being evacuated on Wednesday (Nov. 6) as Hurricane Rafael approaches the province of Artemisa, 53 kilometres from Havana, Cuba.
Hurricane Rafael, the fifth major storm of the year in the Atlantic, has become the strongest hurricane in the basin this late in the season since 2020.
Rapid intensification, which is becoming more common as ocean and atmospheric temperatures rise due to fossil fuel pollution, has made Rafael the ninth Atlantic storm this year to intensify rapidly.
After crossing the Caribbean, Rafael is expected to encounter significant obstacles in the Gulf of Mexico. (Footage by Yander Zamora /Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
