Scientists explore hidden biodiversity in Peruvian sea amid funding challenges
LIMA, PERU-MAR.28: Researchers at the Peruvian Marine Institute (IMARPE) are uncovering the secrets of Peru’s deep sea, where depths plunge to 7,000 meters and just 1% of the ecosystem has been studied. Despite funding and technological constraints, discoveries of new species and climate change monitoring continue.
On March 28, IMARPE scientist Fabiola Zavalaga told Anadolu that research platforms help study deep-sea fisheries, including commercially vital species like cod and hake. "Through these missions, we’ve found new species and records," she said. IMARPE’s specimen collection exceeds 20,000, some preserved since the 1960s.
Among showcased species was the Melanocetus johnsonii ("black seadevil"), a deep-sea anglerfish dwelling at 1,000–4,000 meters. Females use bioluminescent bacteria to lure prey, Zavalaga noted. She also highlighted the protected seahorse Hippocampus ingens, vulnerable due to overexploitation.
Aida Henostroza, at IMARPE’s Aquatic Ecotoxicology Lab, tests water and sediment toxins. "We assess if samples harm marine life," she said. Meanwhile, Geraldine Inga Huamán cultivates microalgae like Isochrysis for fish larvae feed, aiding sustainable aquaculture.
Lili Carrera Santos displayed lab-bred fish thriving on formulated feed, reducing wild feed reliance. "Domestication enables sustainable research," she said.
Though Peru’s deep-sea biodiversity remains largely unexplored, IMARPE’s efforts persist despite funding hurdles. Their work remains vital for conservation and fisheries sustainability.
