BROOKLYN, NY – SEPTEMBER 15, 2020: Recording artist YahZarah Ms. Purple St. James - Dana Nicole Amma Williams, is known professionally as YahZarah, is a Ghanaian American singer and music producer. Eric Garner’s family, Black Lives Matter supporters and local politicians rallied at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center in celebration of what would have been Garner’s 50th birthday. Garner’s mother and activists are pushing for Sept. 15 to be “Eric Garner Day” in NYC. On July 17, 2014, Eric Garner died in the NYC borough of Staten Island after Daniel Pantaleo, a New York City Police Department (NYPD) officer, put him in a prohibited chokehold while arresting him. The actual cause of death remains a topic of debate. Six years later, protests continue following the deaths of George Floyd, Daniel Prude, Breonna Taylor, and others.
