Ray Davies Kinks songwriter and musician interview; Tamzin Sylvester asking question SOT - What do you make of the UK music scene at the minute, what do you make of the young 'uns coming up? Ray Davies interview SOT - I think it's really interesting you know, good bands coming through, diversity's good / But there's a lot of new bands playing real instruments now which is good I think / Bands like Razorlight, some interesting bands coming through / In this place we get new bands coming through all the time because it's a cheap enough studio, they think it's easy enough to come in here and work, and that's the ethos here, that's why The Kinks came here, it's a place where bands can hang out, like a garage band's home and that's why we have this place. Tamzin Sylvester asking question SOT - There is a bit of resurgence of that feeling within the industry at the minute because for a long time it seemed to be commercially produced, bubblegum pop and in the last few years Ray Davies interview continues SOT - I think all the things with Pop Idol and all that stuff that I don't really watch, I think that's the industry taking over musicians and all these talent shows where people have to perform a certain way / I always say give me the person who loses Pop Idol some material to work with because the people who win are already put into that category of being acceptable by the music industry and its exactly where I'm not gravitating, I prefer to get people who have something different to say, that don't necessarily fit in with the format / But there is a forum for those people / What's good now is that new bands like Arctic Monkeys they formed their own website and sold records and they became known because of that / There are ways and means for new bands to get out there / It's still hard, doesn't get any easier
