Pro-EU protests in Georgia continue for 11th Day
TBILISI, GEORGIA - DEC. 9: Protests in Georgia's capital Tbilisi against Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze's decision to suspend the country's EU membership negotiations until 2028 have entered their eleventh day, as tensions continue to rise.
Thousands of demonstrators gathered again overnight outside the parliament building to condemn the government's decision. Protesters were seen banging on the doors of parliament and firing pyrotechnic devices at police and riot police stationed in the area.
Demonstrators hung pictures of journalists, politicians and demonstrators injured during the demonstrations in Tbilisi on the steel trunk of the Christmas tree erected by the municipality as part of the New Year celebrations.
Authorities imposed tight security around the parliament as police and riot police worked to contain the crowds. Representatives of various religious communities also joined the demonstrations, marching in solidarity and calling for unity against the government's decision.
The demonstrators argue that stopping EU membership talks could damage Georgia's future and demand the immediate reversal of the decision.
