Shots of the prosthetic tail of Winter the dolphin
CU prosthetic tail in water CU prosthetic tail CU gel material Kevin Carroll, Hanger Prosthetics and Orthotics [not seen]: "We come up with, first of all, the gel material..." In December 2005, Winter the bottlenose dolphin was found off the coast of Florida near Cape Canaveral. She was tangled in a crab trap with permanent damage to her tail, which had to be amputated. After her transfer to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, Winter taught herself to swim. Fearing further damage to her spine, however, engineers developed a prosthetic tail that consists of a rubber ÒsockÓ and a plastic ÒtailÓ that can be replaced as Winter grows. The story has inspired a childrenÕs book and an upcoming movie.
