Running for mayor in Georgia a Nigerian-born candidate draws attention
TBILISI, GEORGIA - SEPTEMBER 25: Probably, for the first time in Georgian history, a Nigerian-born candidate will compete with other political rivals to become the mayor of Tbilisi.
Nominated for the Tbilisi mayor by the opposition party "Our United Georgia" Arinze Richard Ogbunjuju was given “king of the Igbo tribe” by the Nigerian people many years ago.
The Nigerian native candidate drew attention from the local and foreign media.
He has lived and done business in Georgia since 1996. Now he lives in the capital with his Georgia-native wife and children.
He said, “It was not difficult for me to make a life here because our customs are similar."
"People who do not value their traditions and culture have no future, they cannot accept foreigners either. Georgians respect these values," he added.
The candidate aims to attract foreign investment for the development of the Georgian capital.
Stating that he also obtained Georgian citizenship in 2017, Ogbunuju can also speak Georgian fluently.
Ogbunuju started his business in Georgia selling perfumes and later developed his business by selling second-hand vehicles. Now he owns several businesses.
Isak Giorgadze, chairman of Our United Georgia, said "He loves Georgia and Georgian customs. He loves our history. He has only one goal that is to make Georgia stronger together with us."
