Until 2006 it was classified as a planet. Pluto has one large moon, Charon, and two smaller moons, Nix and Hydra, which cross the view in that order. In this alignment, Pluto's shadow falls directly on Charon and, half an orbit later, vice versa. Pluto and Charon are sometimes considered a binary system, as the centre of mass (barycentre) of the system is between both bodies, not within Pluto
