High speed rail: Phil Hammond visits site of west London high speed rail interchange at Old Oak Common.; Philip Hammond MP (Transport Secretary) interview SOT
(on weather)
- is problem with overhead cables on East Coast main line / hope it will be resolved fairly quickly this morning
- road networks are mainly open / have had very heavy snow and low temperatures but networks are coping well
- have been some particular incidents / will always get those problems / have large supplies of salt / don't normally see temperatures like this in this country
(on HS2)
- understand concern who live along line of route / have met with campaigners / we have done everything we can to mitigate effect on local communities / plans will show how we've achieved that / getting railway down into cuttings where we can, screening it, moving it away from communities where possible / hope people who are open minded will see we've made some significant progress in reducing impact on local communities
- do we go on investing in Britain's future or not / experience of last 30 or 40 years is that stopping investing because we've run into a difficult patch is not right strategy
- if we want to remain competitive and prosperous we have to go on investing in Britain's infrastructure
- this location is where the interchange at Old Oak Common would go, allowing people to change from HS2 onto Crossrail routes / it's huge regeneration area, not just a station but potential to create a new area around here of commercial development, more jobs, more homes, open this area up and get this part of London going again
