Pennsylvania Congresswoman Madeleine Dean of Pennsylvania says in debate on the Tools to Address Known Exploitation by Immobilizing Technological Deepfakes on Websites and Networks Act or TAKE IT DOWN Act that as AI became more prevalent in everyday lives, Congress needed to empower and protect victims from bad actors who shared intimate images without consent, noting that during the 2023-2024 school year, 15% of high school students reported hearing about deep fakes of non-consensual intimate images, recounted how a bright 20-year-old college student named Jack Sullivan was sextorted by men claiming to be a woman on Instagram and ultimately took his own life when he could no longer pay their demands, and noted that the bill would criminalize publication of real or fake AI-generated intimate images and require websites to remove them within 48 hours. The legislation later passed by a 402-2 vote.
