Turkish fancy women pedal fancy bikes on World Car Free Day amid pandemic

IZMIR, TURKEY - SEPTEMBER 20: Pedestrians and cyclists took over streets around the globe on Sunday (September 20), as miles of typically busy roads were closed to motorists for World Car Free Day. But cycling in Turkey was a lot more glamorous spectacle event with a "Fancy Women Bike Ride" which took place across Turkey as the international event was held simultaneously around the World. Hundreds of cities joined the “Fancy Women Bike Ride" this year in more than 10 countries. Among them are Izmir, Istanbul, Milan, Bern, Cologne, Nicosia, Berlin, London, Vancouver, Washington DC, Athens, and San José. The Turkish women dressed up in their fanciest clothes took over the streets, marking the World Car Free Day in the western province of Izmir amid a coronavirus outbreak. This year the number of people attending the organization was less than in previous years. “It’s not easy to admit, but 2020 has brought us a new reality. We are in the middle of a pandemic and we cannot risk people’s health – this year, we are not promoting official public bike rides†the organizers said on their web site. “But through lockdowns and physical distancing, the joys and practicality of cycling are being rediscovered by people around the world. We want to capitalize on this momentum and assert our right to space in this new normal,†the statement added. The fancy bikers demanded more space and asked local authorities to increase safety on roads, create urban cycling infrastructure, and plan bike-friendly services. The bicycle tour first came to life in the Aegean province of Izmir in 2013 - started by Sema Gur, a history teacher. Over the years it has spread to other provinces as well as other countries.
