Pan awards on table / President of the New York Academy of Medicine George Baher awards the Lasker to Vincent du Vigneaud for outstanding achievements in biochemistry; Selman Waksman, Rene Dubos for their studies in soil bacteria which led to the discovery of streptomycin; Martha Eliot, associated chief of the United States Children's Bureau for her achievements in organizing and operating the emergency maternity and infant care program; R. Eugene Dyer from the National Institutes of Health for the organization and administration of the research grants division of National Institutes of Health with the US Public Health Service / SOT Baher: "The last award is one for a group award for administrative achievement and it goes to the Department of Medicine and Surgery of the Veterans Administration and especially to Dr Paul R Hawley, its former chief medical director and Dr Paul Magnuson, its present chief medical director. The purpose of these awards is to acknowledge distinguished efforts in combating the most important causes of disease and of death"
