Gazan boxer empowers displaced girls through boxing amid war

KHAN YOUNIS, PALESTINE - JULY 2: Osama Ayoub, a displaced Gazan boxer, has been training girls in a tent city in Khan Younis, to provide Palestinian girls with a way to alleviate the stress of wartime conditions and to promote a healthy lifestyle. Ayoub said that "the resources are limited" but he trains them "by hand", creating possibilities amid constraints. "The occupation has made it this way, but we are continuing. We are in the game of boxing, and of course, the possibilities are not good," he noted. The girls derive benefits from boxing and hold out high hopes for their future. "Boxing makes me confident of myself," said a displaced Palestinian girl who trains with Ayoub. Noting that they engage in the sport to "overcome the challenges" they face, Hala Ayoub aspires to be like Laila Ali, the daughter of Muhammad Ali. "I learned boxing to learn to defend myself, to stand up against the injustice in the world," she added. Israel, flouting a UN Security Council resolution demanding an immediate cease-fire, has faced international condemnation amid its continued brutal offensive on Gaza since an Oct. 7, 2023 attack by the Palestinian group Hamas. Nearly 38,000 Palestinians have since been killed, mostly women and children, and around 87,300 others injured, according to local health authorities. Over eight months into the Israeli war, vast tracts of Gaza lie in ruins amid a crippling blockade of food, clean water and medicine. Israel stands accused of genocide at the International Court of Justice, whose latest ruling ordered it to immediately halt its military operation in the city of Rafah, where over a million Palestinians had sought refuge from the war before it was invaded on May 6.
