INTV: 100th Anniversary of the Capture of Riqueval Bridge on 29th September 1918
On Saturday it is 100 years since the capture of Riqueval Bridge on 29th September 1918, an extraordinary and morale boosting WWI military action that helped paved the way for the final Allied victory in November of that year.
It was one of the opening actions of the Battle of St Quentin Canal which saw the Allies finally break through the German fortified defensive line, known as the Hindenburg Line, that the British had failed to penetrate during the 1917 battles of Arras, Third Ypres and Cambrai.
These units were part 137 (Staffordshire) Brigade of the 46th (North Midland) Division. The Western Front Association will unveil a rededicated memorial plaque to mark the centenary of the assault on the bridge.
Present at the ceremony was Lieutenant Colonel Mark Bailey, great nephew of Corporal Ernest Young who was awarded two Military Medals for his gallantry in action on the canal. (Footage by The Western Front Association)
