Tokyo 2020 Committee Scraps Controversial Logo

TOKYO, JAPAN - SEPT. 1: Olympic minister Toshiaki Endo said Tuesday the Tokyo 2020 Olympic organizing committee has scrapped the controversial logo for the Games by Kenjiro Sano that has sparked accusations of plagiarism and nationwide scorn. The organizing committee held an emergency meeting Tuesday afternoon to address the issue, attended by Endo, Tokyo 2020 chief Yoshiro Mori, Tokyo Gov. Yoichi Masuzoe and Japanese Olympic Committee President Tsunekazu Takeda. The decision to scrap the logo was approved at the meeting after Sano "offered to drop the design himself," Endo told reporters. Sano has been accused of plagiarism by Belgian designer Olivier Debie, who has filed a lawsuit to prevent use of the design. Masuzoe spoke ahead of the meeting, saying, "I feel like we've been betrayed." Sano could not be immediately reached for comment. His firm said, "If we are to announce anything, we will do so through our website."
