Senator Rob Portman Reacts to Death of John Glenn

Ohio Republican Rob Portman calls the death at 95 of astronaut and former Senator John Glenn the loss of an American icon, saying that television coverage focused on his being the first person to orbit the Earth in the capsule Friendship 7, a fighter pilot who signed up after Pearl Harbor. Portman says they both served on the Governmental Affairs Committee, discusses his career prior to the Senate and having afterward created a public service institute whose students he loved, that wife Annie Glenn was at his side constantly, and that his life story also is part of American history.
