Iranian Charge d Affairs Ali Agah

CU "Nobody can say that nothing will happen in Iran if the Shah stays here, and I can guarantee you there will be constant irritation inside them that therefor they will react. This is a fact." Iranian Charge d' Affairs Ali Agah comments on the taking of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran on November 4, 1979 in light of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi's admittance to the Mayo Clinic in October of that year. The Shah had been overthrown in February, and Iranian revolutionaries feared the U.S., which had a long history of support for the Shah, including a coup in his support in 1953, would try to reinstate him. Admitting the Shah to a U.S. hospital intensified that fear. The taking of the Embassy prompted anti-Iranianism in the U.S. Thus, the "irritation" Agah speaks of reflects dual anti-Americanism and anti-Iraniansim.
