Nobel prize-winning former Colombian president criticizes government
BOGOTA, COLOMBIA - SEPTEMBER 29: Nobel prize-winning former Colombian president and a former presidential candidate criticized the current government in the Colombian capital Bogota on Tuesday, Sept. 28.
Juan Manuel Santos and Ingrid Betancourt attended to their book launches named as "A pending conversation".
During the conversation, Santos claimed that the current government has been acting against the peace process in the country.
"I was very sad to hear the president of all Colombians. Even though I do not agree with everything that he has done, he is everyone's president. When he goes abroad, he represents all of us. He went to the UN to say that he received a very fragile agreement despite the UN has said that it has been the largest and most ambitious agreement that has been negotiated in recent history. The current and previous secretaries of the UN said that the best news is the peace agreement in Colombia," he said.
Santos said there is a contradiction in what the current government says and does.
"I think the current situation is bad. I mean the country looks bad. Because there is a contradiction in what it (the current government) says and does. I believe that the agreement advances and is protected despite it has had a hostile government. The government was elected against the peace process. And now it has been claiming that for a long time. It pulls me to do a lot. Because, the 310-page (peace) agreement is the good part of the solution for the current problems of the country," he said.
Betancourt claimed that Colombians are inert against the abuse of power.
"I believe that we are all kidnapped by a corrupt regime, by a super criminal structure. It means that when we want to oppose and confront the regime, they pass us a very strong collection account. The price that the country has paid for trying to free itself from this yoke and corruption has been immense." she said. (Footage by Juan David Moreno Gallego /Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
