African amputee football player encourages all to pursue their dreams
ISTANBUL, TURKEY - MAY 25: "No matter what your disability is, you can do anything as long as you are confident in yourself."
These words belong to an African amputee football player who lost his foot due to a wrong treatment in his country Ghana.
Captain of Istanbul-based Pendik Municipality Amputee Football Team, Fuseini Iddi has been playing in his current team for the past five years.
Before, he was living with his 11 siblings and family in Accra, the capital of Ghana. His football journey started at the age of 5. At a young age, he lost both his mother and father.
Recalling the days when doctors had to amputate his foot, Iddi tells:
“I had to sign a paper to approve for my feet to be cut off. My family and brothers did not accept, they were all upset and cried. I was crying, too, but there was nothing else to do, what could we do? I signed it in the end.”
However, his foot was only broken and he had injuries in the knee during a football match. As he could not afford a good surgery, his leg was amputated.
Just as he was thinking that his football career was over, Iddi saw on TV "people like him" playing football, and he immediately contacted the coach, who later chose him for the Ghana Amputee National Football Team.
During the World Cup in Mexico, he was noticed by the Turkish team and was invited to Istanbul.
Talking about what his talented player had been through, the Head of Pendik Municipality Amputee Football Team, Osman Bozanli says:
"In Turkey, we have not heard of any such incidence - cutting off a broken foot. Unfortunately, Fuseini lost his foot as a vascular surgeon was not found in time due to the financial means and the conditions in his country."
Having confidence in himself and being certain of his abilities, 27-year-old football player says he “can do anything with one foot" and urges all disabled people in the world to follow their dreams. (Footage by Sinan Sariyar/Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
