Universal Newsreel - desegregation riots, Mississippi, USA; 1962

Newsreel reporting on riots following the enrolment of the first African American student, James H. Meredith, at the University of Mississippi following legal challenges to segregation in educational institutions. Views of Meredith walking, Governor Ross Barnett (who has fought a court order to desegregate), Edwin Walker (who faces charges of inciting insurrection) and troops on the streets of Oxford, Mississippi. From a press room, President John F. Kennedy appeals for peaceful compliance with federal law: 'Americans are free... to disagree with the law, but not to disobey it. For any government of laws and not of men, no man, however prominent or powerful, no mob, however unruly or boisterous, is entitled to defy a court of law. If this country should ever reach the point where any man or group of men by force or threat of force could long deny the commands of our court and our constitution, then no law would stand free from doubt... no citizen would be safe from his neighbours.' USA; precise dates unknown, on or around 30th September 1962. (Universal Newsreel_Episode 1962 – ABMA707K)
