WTOP News General Manager Joel Oxley tells the Senate Judiciary Antitrust Subcommittee in prepared statement at hearing on big tech challenges to journalism and the news industry that he was keenly aware of the significant financial resources needed to run a radio station and invest in equipment necessary to serve the public day in and day out 365 days a year and revenues had experienced a freefall in recent years due to rapid, anti competitive expansion of the dominant online platforms who had ended the advertising marketplace, tech platforms' market power undermining the online advertising model for local broadcast journalism as content gatekeepers stifling ability to generate user traffic second and their take it or leave it approach leaving local broadcasters with a below market sliver of those advertising revenues derived from products in a real Catch 22 to attract online user traffic through the major platforms and ad clicks dictated by online platforms to value their product.
