Slow Procession Marks Kyoto’s Long Past
Nearly 80,000 spectators gathered in Kyoto as a costumed procession of Heian Period (794-1185) courtiers and retainers traveled slowly down the city’s Miyako-oji thoroughfare as part of the Aoi Masturi festival held on May 15, 2016 in Kyoto, Japan. One of the ancient capital’s three major festivals, the event was first held about 1,400 years as a way of praying for a bountiful harvest. It took nearly five hours for the dignified procession to cover the 8-kilometer distance from the Kyoto Imperial Palace to Kamigamojinja shrine by way of Shimogamojinja shrine.
