Travel Destination: Santorini Island
Nea Kameni island located at the centre of the Santorini caldera. Nea Kameni island of volcanic origin located in the Aegean Sea within the flooded Santorini caldera. The island is visited daily by many of tourist boats throughout the summer. Visitors climb a gravel path to reach the top of the 130 meter high volcanic crater. The last eruption on Nea Kameni occurred in 1950. At present, Santorini is dormant, and volcanism manifests as fumarolic activity and hot springs around the islands. The myth that Santorini is the ancient city of Atlantis, which submerged over 9,500 years ago. The island has many active sulfur vents.
