Muslims observe holy night of Raghaib in Diyarbakir
DIYARBAKIR, TURKEY MARCH 07: Muslims observe the holy night of Laylat al-Raghaib at the Fatih Pasha Mosque on March 07, 2019 in Diyarbakir’s Sur district, southeastern Turkey. Ali Erbas, the head of Turkey’s Religious Affairs Directorate gives a sermon during the celebrations at the historic mosque which was reopened for worship on Thursday coincided with the Muslim holy night of Laylat al-Raghaib marking the beginning of three holy months on the Islamic Hijri calendar: Rajab, Sha’ban, and Ramadan. Raghaib, the first Thursday night of the Islamic month of Rajab, comes from the root "regabe" in Arabic, which means to desire, seek, or tend towards. It is marked on the Thursday night preceding the first Friday in the Islamic month of Rajab. Muslims perform special prayers on this night and read out from the holy Quran. Four years after it was gutted by a fire set by PKK terrorists, a historic mosque in southeastern Turkey reopened for worship on Thursday. The historic mosque -- also known as the Lead-Covered Mosque -- was built by Biyikli Mehmet Pasha, who was appointed Diyarbakir’s governor in 1516.
