Musicians Perform Irish Reel on Pub Window Ledge as Lockdown Kicks In

Musicians sat on the window ledge of a pub and played traditional Irish music in Offaly, Ireland, on March 15, as the nation faced the closure of all pubs in light of the coronavirus pandemic. Gerald Hough, owner of the JJ Hough's Singing Pub, self-recorded a video showing him and the pub's house musician, Luke O'Connor, playing on the window ledge of the hotel, as a way to show respect to the Italian people who have been singing on their balconies. Hough, sits on the left of the video, playing the Bodhran, and on the other window, O'Connor strums a Banjo. Hough told Storyful that the pair are playing an Irish reel called 'Trip to Cullenstown'. The Irish government announced all pubs in the country would close on Sunday as the confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the Republic of Ireland reached 169, https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-51901372 BBC reported . Hough told Storyful that he had closed the pub, which was established in the 1640's, prior to the government announcement, to provide safety to customers and staff. "We must all make sacrifices at this time to stop the spread of COVID-19," Hough told Storyful. "The news that I was closing was met with a surprisingly positive reaction, as people began to realize this situation spans way beyond the concerns of our small local community." Hough told Storyful that a number of pubs might not reopen once the coronavirus pandemic passes, as the industry is facing a severe decline. (Footage By Gerald Hough/Storyful via Getty Images)
