Spain: Granada's cultural richness attracting people in Islam's holy month of Ramadan

GRANADA, SPAIN - APRIL 26: A mosque in Andalusian city of Granada located in southern Spain overlooking the famous Alhambra Palace is attracting more people during Islam's holy month of Ramadan due to the cultural richness of the city. While Granada, the last Islamic land in Spain during the Andalusian Islamic period (711-1492), continues to be a city that preserves its special value for Muslims with its historical importance, it also attracts tourists with its cultural richness and tolerance. About 2 million Muslims live in Spain. Over 36,000 of this number live in Granada. In this beautiful city where members of different religions live together, people present a culture of tolerance to the whole world. In the Muslim district of the city, where tourists are most interested, the sounds of azan can be heard in the streets. Umar del Pozo, the Chairman of the Foundation of Grand Mosque of Granada (Mezquita Mayor de Granada), everyone has good relations with other religions. “We have very good relations with our neighbors. We can recite azan (call to prayer) loudly from the minarets. We have the only mosque in Spain where the azan is recited,” he said. He said Muslims living in Granada practice their religion freely and can tell other people. Elif Gul Mahur Sali, a Turkish Erasmus student in Granada, stressed the sincerity of local people. “Muslims, especially, in Granada love Turkey and Turks. And they say that if you are from Turkey, you are one of our family, you are from here, we love you." Said Saoud, a Moroccan business manager, said: Granada has a very important history. We live here in peace without any problems. (Footage by Senhan Bolelli/Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
