MEDEA: Greek tragedy meets with contemporary dance in Colombian theater

BOGOTA, COLOMBIA - APRIL 11, 2024: A mixture of Greek tragedy and contemporary dance has given birth to a theater production named 'Medea' in the Colombian capital of Bogota. The gripping production features 13 dancers and two interdisciplinary artists. The provocative play which is based on the tragedy by Euripides, delves into themes of love, revenge, and moral crisis. Anadolu captured on Thursday (April 11) a practice of the theater play involving modern dance figures, stunning acting performances and riveting live music together in black and white ambiance at the Delia Zapata Olivella National Center for the Arts. In Euripides' tragic tale, Medea, consumed by jealousy at her husband Jason's remarriage to Glauce, is driven to an unthinkable act of revenge. Overwhelmed by anguish, she makes the agonizing decision to end the lives of both her rival and her own children. Fleeing with their lifeless bodies in Helios' chariot, she seeks refuge in the sacred grove of Hera. The artist and director of the production, Jimmy Rangel, has pointed out the female influence in MEDEA, being a story centered around a woman in pain. “Medea is a very long journey about a mother, about a woman, about a mother-woman role that has to be debated every day in small circumstances such as getting up and raising children or in gigantic and universal circumstances such as being a migrant or simply being a woman.” Rangel said.(Footage by Ernesto Che Mercado Jones/Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
