Boffins Recreate Ancient Mexican Warrior Queen's Outfit In Tlaxiaco, Oaxaca, Mexico
Mexican boffins have recreated the outfit worn by Mixtec warrior queen Lady Six Monkey (1073-1101) in order to showcase the important role that Mixtec women have played since the Postclassic period.
The project involved six months of painstaking work by experts from Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology, who carried out iconographic studies on centuries-old codices to replicate the attire worn by the warrior queen. The resulting outfit was then modelled by singer Edith Aparicio Martinez from Tlaxiaquense.
The project aims to promote scientific dissemination and break down archetypes that associate femininity only with domestic aspects during the pre-Columbian era.
