Master of the 'Queen Elizabeth' liner retries; ENGLAND: Southampton: Aboard 'Queen': EXT MS Queen Elizabeth at dock: 2—shot Reggie & Sir Ivan Thompson: You are the most unpopular man in Southampton this morning, how is that?) A: I realised this — wish to apologise. At 3 a.m. all the tugs blew farewell blast of 3 whistles and we had to reply. When the Queen Elizabeth replies you hear it everywhere in the New Forest. (Q: When was your first crossing?) A: My first crossing as a boy was in 1902 on the old 'Lukania'. (Q: Your worst moment at sea?) A: Two or three voyages ago when David Nixon pushed a lighted cigarette through Viscount Montgomery's best silk handkerchief — but it only lasted a minute. (Q: Your best moment at sea?) Had a great voyage when Queen Mother crossed in ship - really wonderful. Ship was crowded with passengers, all nationalities. One night H.M. came down to my table - most impressive moment he's known at sea - she waked through dining saloon, everybody stood rigid, could hear a pin drop, until H.M. was seated CU: I don't plan to do anything now - watch football - catch up on family life. I have a bowler hat - an old one I doubt if it would fit. EXT LS Walks down gangway of ship - in civvies - officers salutes. MS Walks along dock pan up to bows of 'Queen'. INT Sir Ivan Thompson SOF
