Massive protests held against military takeover in Sudan

KHARTOUM, SUDAN - NOVEMBER 30: Massive protests against military takeover continued on Tuesday (Nov. 30) in Sudan’s capital Khartoum. Hundreds of protesters gathered at different points in the capital Khartoum upon a call of the Sudanese Resistance Committees and marched towards the Presidential Palace. The demonstrators chanted slogans condemning the military intervention on October 25 and the political agreement signed between the head of the army, Gen. Abdul Fattah Alburhan to reinstate Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok. The police responded with tear gas to the crowd gathered around the south gate of the palace. In addition to the capital Khartoum, similar demonstrations were held in Atbara in the north, Kassala in the east, Port Sudan, and Madani in central Sudan. Before the military takeover on Oct. 25, Sudan was administered by a sovereign council of military and civilian officials which was overseeing the transition period until elections in 2023 as part of a precarious power-sharing pact between the military and the Forces of Freedom and Change coalition. The agreement between Hamdok and Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, stipulates 14 points, including the return of Hamdok as prime minister, formation of a qualified professionals' (technocratic) government, the release of political prisoners, and a pledge to jointly continue the nation’s democratic path. Following al-Burhan measures that deposed Hamdok’s government on Oct. 25, Sudan witnessed mass rallies and protests that caused the death of 42 civilians, according to Sudan's Doctors Committee.(Footage by Mahmoud Haggag Mahmoud Ali /Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
